Let’s be real. Most of us are not waking up 45 minutes early to do an elaborate hair routine. Between getting ready, scrolling your phone for “just one minute” (which becomes fifteen), and trying to leave on time, your hair gets whatever time is left over.
Good news: you don’t need a lot of time. You need the right five minutes.
Minute 1: The detangle
Before you do anything else, gently brush through your hair starting from the ends and working up. This gets rid of overnight tangles without ripping through your strands. Hold the mid-section of your hair with one hand while you brush the ends—it reduces tension on your roots.
Minute 2: The smooth
Once detangled, brush from root to tip with long, gentle strokes. This distributes your natural oils, which is basically free conditioner. Your hair will look shinier and feel softer without adding any product. If you’re using a boar bristle or mixed bristle brush, this step is where it really earns its keep.
Minute 3: The style check
Take a look and decide what you’re working with today. Some days your hair cooperates. Some days it’s chosen chaos. If you’re having a good hair day, leave it alone—don’t over-touch. If things need taming, a quick re-brush through the front sections and a light smoothing of flyaways is usually enough.
Minutes 4–5: The finish
If you’re using any product, a light oil, a texture spray, whatever your go-to is—now’s the time. Apply it and then give one final brush-through to set everything in place.
That’s it. Five minutes. Your hair looks intentional, feels good, and you didn’t have to sacrifice your morning for it.
A great routine starts with a great brush. Find yours at Private Matter.
