Your twenties are supposed to be the decade where you look your best, right? That’s what everyone says. And yet here you are, dealing with adult acne, finding your first grey hair at 24, and realising that the skincare routine you’ve been faking for years actually matters now.
Nobody prepares you for this. So here’s the honest version.
Your skin changes. A lot.
The skin you had at 18 is not the skin you have at 25. Hormonal shifts, stress, diet, lifestyle - all of it shows up on your face in ways it didn’t before. Products that worked perfectly two years ago might suddenly break you out or do nothing.
This is normal. It’s not a sign that something’s wrong with you. It just means you need to pay attention and be willing to adjust. Skincare isn’t a set-and-forget situation.
Expensive doesn’t always mean better
This is the decade where marketing hits hardest. Every influencer has a “holy grail” product that costs $80. And sometimes those products are great. But some of the most effective skincare ingredients - niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, salicylic acid - are available in affordable products that work just as well.
The key is understanding ingredients, not brand names. A $15 serum with the right concentration of vitamin C will outperform a $90 one that’s mostly filler and fragrance.
Sleep is a beauty product
You will hear this and roll your eyes. Then you’ll have a week of bad sleep and look in the mirror and understand. There is no concealer, serum, or filter that replaces what seven to eight hours of sleep does for your face.
Dark circles, dull skin, breakouts, puffiness—most of these improve dramatically with consistent sleep. It’s boring advice. It’s also the most effective advice anyone will give you.
Your hair is telling you something
If your hair is suddenly drier, thinner, more brittle, or growing slower than it used to; your body is trying to communicate. Hair health is one of the first places that stress, poor nutrition, or hormonal changes show up.
Before you throw products at the problem, look at the basics: Are you eating enough protein? Drinking enough water? Managing stress? Getting your iron levels checked? The answer is usually in the fundamentals, not in a bottle.
The best thing you can do is build a routine you’ll actually stick to
The twelve-step skincare routine looks great on TikTok. In reality, most people need three to five products and consistency. A simple routine you do every single day beats an elaborate one you abandon after two weeks.
Same goes for hair care. One good brush, used properly, every day. That’s it. The secret isn’t complexity, it’s showing up.
